How to Prepere for a Gastroscopy?
If there are no contraindications, everybody irrespective of age can have gastroscopy. Before the procedure patient have to be on an empty stomach. Last meal should be eaten previous afternoon and in a day of gastroscopy patient cannot eat or drink. In case of gastroscopy being conducted in the evening patient should not eat anything for at least 6, or the best 8 hours before the procedure.
Gastroscopy is fast examination, lasting 5-10 minutes and it is relatively safe.
Complications occur really rarely. There is possibility of bleeding after collecting a biopsy or polypectomy, exceptionally perforation of gastrointestinal tract (specially esophagus) can occur.
Contraindications for gastroscopy are severe heart diseases, respiratory system diseases and blood clotting disorders.
Strict contraindications are recent myocardial infarction, acute coronary insufficiency, respiratory and circulatory failure, sever cardiac dysrythmia, clinical syndrome of acute abdomen.
Relative contraindications include lack of patient’s cooperation, aortic aneurysm, coagulopathy or recent abdominal cavity surgery.
