A routine resting ECG gives only a couple of minutes record of heart’s electrical activity. Holter monitoring consists in twenty-four-hour registration of heart’s work and therefore much more precise analysis is possible. An examination is carried out during normal daily activities of patient (work, housework, rest, sleep) without need of hospitalization. It gives opportunity to register cardiac dysrhythmia, diagnose disorders in blood flow through the heart or to evaluate a pacemaker work. Holter monitoring also gives us possibility of controlling accuracy of heart rate, control medications given to a patient, which are commonly used in hypertension and ischaemic heart disease treatment.
Indications for 24h holter monitoring:
-ischaemic heart disease
-evaluation of dysrhythmia treatment accuracy
Disposable electrodes are attached to the chest. Then they are connected with adequate cables to the device registering ECG record. This device is similar to a walkman and is fastened to a belt.
During an examination the patient cannot have a shower or a bath. Use of electrical pillows or blankets is not allowed, as well as interference in the device’s work.
After 24 hours a holter monitor is taken off in a holter room, an examination’s record is entered into computer and evaluated by the specialist.
Holter monitoring can be carried out in each age. It is also safe in case of pregnant women.
